Steps and decking disappear after dark. You know the edge is there, but the eye has nothing to catch on, and the usual fix — a security floodlight blasting the whole garden — ruins exactly the atmosphere you spent the evening building.

These solar lights mark the level change instead of lighting the lot. Set into a riser, along a deck edge or on a fence post, they lay a low band of warm light on the ground where a foot is about to land. They charge through the day and come on by themselves at dusk, so there is nothing to switch, time or wire.

The housing is moulded ABS, deliberately unfussy — once it is in place you see the light rather than the fitting. At 3000K the tone is warm rather than blue, closer to a lantern than a floodlight, and twenty-four LEDs behind the lens spread it evenly instead of leaving a single hot spot. Used along a run of steps, the effect is a rhythm of soft marks rather than a lit-up staircase.
