A garden wall or fence line goes flat and featureless after sunset. The planting you have looked after all summer vanishes, the gate becomes a guess, and the only alternative most people are offered is a motion floodlight that turns the whole space into a car park.

This pair of solar wall lights does something quieter. Fixed to a fence post, a boundary wall or either side of a gate, each one lays a defined wash of light down the surface below it — enough to read the path by, not enough to flatten the garden. They charge in daylight and switch themselves on as the light goes, with a low setting for long summer evenings and a higher one when you want more.

Four focusing lenses keep the beam collected rather than spilling sideways, so the light falls where it is aimed. The body is moulded ABS and polycarbonate in black, plain enough that by day it recedes into the fence rather than announcing itself. Sold as a pair, so a gate or a run of posts can be treated symmetrically.
