The draining board is the least considered surface in most kitchens. A permanently damp tea towel, a plastic rack quietly growing limescale, a puddle that spreads across the worktop every evening. It undoes the tidiness of everything around it.
A diatomite mat handles the problem differently. Water is drawn straight into the stone and off the surface within minutes, so dishes dry where they stand and the worktop beneath stays dry. Between washes it simply sits flat and clean, rather than being wrung out and draped somewhere to dry itself.
Diatomaceous earth has the matte, chalky character of unglazed stone — cool to the touch, softly powdery underhand, with no plastic sheen at all. In white or one of two greys it reads as part of the worktop rather than an object placed on top of it, which is what makes it easy to leave out.
